Technology
I’ve been here since the summer semester thus so far and I’ve noticed that the technology on campus remains static despite my complaining. I want to know where my 40k a year is going.
This means that thwarting the security on campus isn’t unreasonably difficult. People often forget to close out the browser or log of the machine after using it, so all their session information gets saved in the browser, and becomes victim to the shenannigans of other students, which can be quite hilarious. I mean, deepfreeze is installed on practically every machine on campus, and it resets the computers back to their default state, erasing every piece of data on the machine. There’s so excuse for students not to protect themselves when its that easy — just restart the machine.
Of course one of the caveats of having such software installed is that the drives become horrendously fragmented, making the computers even slower than they already would be without bloatware. The IT personnel on campus installed it so that viruses from Facebook and such wouldn’t take over the campus. But I’ve still seen a few instances of botnet and other nonsense running in the computers in the ARC, which is underbudgeted more than ever. Half the computers in there don’t work, and the other half are as slow as slow molasses… (so trite… )
